Created in 2006, the Foundation Folkes was created by Paragon Europe in order to benefit the Maltese economy through driving economic development in knowledge-based sectors thus creating a basis for sustainable growth with an international focus.
Meet our team
To promote Maltese Islands’ interests in the global market in terms of the knowledge-based economy in order to ensure the sustainability of growth, jobs and wealth whilst preserving the national characteristics of a small Euro-Med island state.
- To promote awareness and best policies of consolidated and emerging sectorial trends (such as biotechnology, nanotechnology) that have a significant impact on the knowledge economy.
- To promote innovative vocational and educational training that matches industry’s needs.
- To spearhead pilot projects that require considerable technology transfer, and that would assist the development and growth of new industries.
- To advance the implementation and take-up of new financial instruments that would assist in the transition to the knowledge-economy.

Innovation and creativity
FOLKES promotes innovative vocational and educational training that matches industry’s needs. Since 2006 it has assisted local community groups to enhace their knowledge of the potential of innovation, technology transfer and the use of EU funds in unleashing such potential.
FOLKES has also been active with younger generation through Youth Section which focuses specifically on knowledge economy issues that affect young people that have a high level of innovative concepts and are usually very creative. Innovation and creativity are fundamental components of a knowledge-based economy. It is essential to bridge the gap between education and industry and in this respect young people can play a key role Through its initiatives FOLKES Youth Section aims to increases these synergies for the benefit of young people, industry and Malta in general.
International cooperation and partnerships
The Foundation is actively participating and seeking participation in EU-funded programmes such as structural funding, Leonardo da Vinci and framework programmes. It seeks to increasingly promote Malta’s participation in EU affairs in terms of knowledge economy and Lisbon strategy.
